Tether Eyes $20B Funding Round at $500B Valuation
Tether is preparing a massive private funding round, aiming to raise $15–20 billion at a valuation of approximately $500 billion, dwarfing its closest stablecoin rival, Circle.
Funding and Expansion Plans
The funding round will involve new equity issuance rather than selling existing shares, allowing Tether to scale its operations across current and new business lines. The firm plans to leverage this capital to expand into sectors such as AI, commodity trading, energy, communications, and media, diversifying beyond stablecoins.
Tether’s growth comes alongside its return to the US market. A new regulated stablecoin for American users, USAT, will operate under the GENIUS Act framework, marking a strategic push for domestic adoption.
Market Position
Tether remains the largest stablecoin issuer globally, with a circulating supply of $173 billion, representing 56% of the total stablecoin market. USDC, its closest competitor, holds a $74 billion supply and a 25% market share. The total stablecoin market capitalization is approaching a record $300 billion, reflecting surging demand this year.
The planned funding round could place Tether alongside high-profile tech firms in terms of valuation, highlighting the scale and influence of the world’s leading stablecoin issuer.
